Heat SinkHeat Sink is a method of accumulating, recording, and translating the bodily presence of a performer over time. The gestures, translated from one medium into another - from live performance to video, from video to a computer program, from a computer program to an electronic circuit, from an electronic circuit into a space heater - explore how performance can be presented in multiple modes and serve as an instrument for a continued performance. In an era of high technology where live performance can be easily replaced by automated systems, Heat Sink explores not only the role and presence of the live performer but also how automated systems can extend the duration of a performance.

Music from the 4th of July3 hour durational performance/installation. The performer plays 4 loud speaker driven tea light lanterns each tuned by unique delay and amplifier circuits. The overall composition is created by gently changing the amount of vibration to the lanterns by actively pulling on long pieces of attached kite string. Throughout the performance plays a field recording of Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood's fireworks celebration.

Chest Piece: ImpostureLive performance that proposes a method of posturing in order to engage an electronic musical network. While imitating the distorted postures of the figure's portrayed in Francis Bacon's paintings, the performer controls a handmade electronic necklace and party horn. The necklace and party horn are wired together so that the horn resonates with the sound of handmade circuitry attached to the back of a copper clad PC board necklace. The party horn interfaces with the computer which in turn processes sounds made from the analog circuitry.

One of Pieces for Removing the BodyA performance work which emphasizes the process of recording through an idiosyncratic sequence of body movement. The body roughly influences a live audio/video sampling system. The live samples are mixed with prerecorded material as the piece unfolds.

I Want to CommunicateVideo composite of a performer reading a text while shaking and jumping to control an ear piercing feedback tone. The text devolves into the repetitive mantra, "I want to communicate," while the performer becomes exhausted from the physical activity. The feedback network consists of the microphones and speaker that are visible in the video. The performer stands on a wooden plank that controls a pressure sensor which switches the network on and off sometimes affected by the weight of the performer.

The performer kneels and waves his arms over his head. This gesture is repeated live in front of a video camera and projection until a computer program has reduced the images of the body into amorphous black or white shapes. These shapes are then uploaded during the performance onto a server where they may be further downloaded for public use on the web.

Looking for Guidance A cut up text that is loosely associated to an older traveling salesman and his grandson is read and recorded while the performer jumps into a wall.

To SupplicateThe palm of the hands are upturned and shaken up and down for about five minutes. This video documents the movement of supplication as a repetitive anonymous activity. It explores the affective qualities of gesture while heightening the expectation of communication.
